Eco Club

About the club

The Eco Club at Unity College was formally established on June 4th, 2016, with the launch of a tree plantation drive to commemorate World Environment Day. Since its inception, the club has been dedicated to raising awareness among students about pressing environmental issues and engaging them in efforts to foster a healthier planet.

At the heart of our mission is the desire to cultivate a sense of responsibility towards the environment and encourage active participation in environmental conservation. Through targeted programs and activities, we aim to nurture a community of environmentally conscious citizens committed to creating a cleaner and greener world.

Currently overseen by seven dedicated teacher in-charges, along with two student coordinators and a vibrant community of 50 active members, the Eco Club is a dynamic hub of eco-conscious initiatives and collaborative action.

Achievements

  • 1. Eco Club, Unity College has signed an MOU with e-Circle Dimapur in April 2019 to collaborate in creating awareness about the proper management of electronic waste. The main objective is to create awareness among the students and emphasis in donating e-waste to the e-waste collection centre. E-waste generated from the college and from individual homes are been collected in designated e-waste dustbins and transferred to e-circle waste management centers for processing. Activities relating to creating awareness about e-waste management both in the college and outside the campus have been conducted. This collaboration is still an ongoing important program for the club.
  • Eco Club, Unity College has also signed an MOU with Nagaland Zoological Park in August 2022. The objective is to have mutual cooperation and participation in conservation of biodiversity and environment protection. Since June 2023 the club has started planting local medicinal herbs and fruits trees in the herbal garden. The club also does active cleaning drive in the garden to maintain the herbal garden.

Activities

Date: 29th June 2024

With the initiative to maintain green space in the campus, on 29th June 2024 the club organised re-potting and addition of 12 pots of flowering and green plants donated by the teaching faculty and club members. This initiative has been successful due to the financial and moral support from the college authority and faculty.

Date: 5th June 2024

Eco club Unity College celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June by adopting the theme for 2024# Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience. As an effective response to the theme planting of 30 tree saplings at the State Stadium Dimapur were organised involving 21 club members and 5 teachers in charges. The saplings were donated by the Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Dimapur and include flowering plants like Lagerstromia speciosa and varieties of Caesalpi.

Date: 13th – 14th April 2024

Eco club and Young Indians, Unity College jointly organised an educational trip to Peren district on 13th and 14th April 2024 under the theme “Eco-Tourism: Exploring Sustainable Tourism and Nature Conservation” with a total of 61 students and teachers. The students installed eco-friendly bamboo dustbins at Hi Peren camping site and also participated in collecting and disposing of litter in Tepuiki
River.

Observation of important days

Every year Eco club takes the initiative to celebrate important days along with the world related to the environment. The club organizes programs based on the given annual themes to celebrate World Environment Day, World Water Day, and National Wildlife Week by organizing awareness campaign, cleanliness drive, plantation drive and formal programs both within the college and outside the campus. On 7th October 2023, the club in collaboration with the Center for Indigenous Culture and Environment Studies organized a seminar on the topic “Indigenous Knowledge on Conservation of Biodiversity” to sensitize the members about the importance and relevance of our traditional knowledge for conservation of biodiversity. To celebrate World Water Day, the students participated in an awareness campaign on the importance of clean water for human and the earth through posters on 22nd March 2023 at Dhobi Nala Junction, Dimapur.

Plantations

The club has taken up various plantation drives in the college campus, individual home, abandoned jhum fields and along the road to create a greener environment. Flower planting in the college compound, maintaining green potted plants and herbal garden are instances through which plantation is been encouraged.  In 2022, the Eco Club in collaboration with Eco Warriors, Wokha Forest Division and JICA Forest Management Project Team, organized a cleanliness drive in Doyang area and planted 2000 saplings of neem and stink beans in the abandoned jhum fields at Old Riphym Village on 3th-4th June.

Cleanliness drive and waste management

To promote and participate in cleanliness, the students have been engaged in community services and donation of waste bins. In 2023, the members were involved in waste collection to reduce municipal plastic waste by collecting single use plastic (MLP) both from their respective homes and in the college canteen. On 5th June 2023, the Eco Club and YI Unity College collaborated and organized social work along the road towards the college in Residency Colony. The students took the initiative to make and set up 4 eco-friendly bamboo dustbins on that particular.

Maintenance of herbal garden (NZP)

The club members have planted around 150 fruit trees in the herbal garden in 2023 and actively participate in cleaning to promote the growth of the trees. The club members have been involved in planting and taking care of the plants on non working Saturdays on rotation basis to engage all the members. This is an initiative to promote the propagation and conservation of local herbal plants.

Training programs

The club members have participated in different training programs both in the college as well as in other institute and centers. The club with e-Circle Dimapur organizes annually both orientation and e-waste training programs in the college where the founders of e-Circle educates the students on why and how to properly dispose personal electronic waste  generated from home and community. The students who have attended the program are awarded with certificates.

Camping and field trip

The club also organizes camping and trips to create a platform for exposure, recreation and to enhance their learning in a new environment. With financial assistance from the college authority and student’s participation, the club members have visited places like Kaziranga National park, Doyang Project, Pulie Badze, Khonoma and Dzuleke. During such trip, the students get the opportunity to experience and learn new things at the same time contribute to the community as well.

Unity College is recognized by the Government of Nagaland vide notification No. HTE/5-3/2002 dated 11th Dec. 2007 and is permanently affiliated to Nagaland University vide notification No. NU-CDC/C-52-2007-2801 dated 12th Sept. 2012.
