The Department of Sociology successfully held the Annual Lecture Series with a Special Lecture on “Indigenous Cosmology and Environmental Sustainability: Insights from the Naga Hills” on 25th October 2024. The lecture was delivered by Professor. Toshimenla Jamir, from the Department of Sociology at Nagaland University.
The purpose of the Annual lecture series is to expand learning beyond traditional syllabi and classroom experiences. Through expert lecture, we aim to explore sociology’s diverse domains, seeking nuanced insights into key topics and fostering a deeper understanding of sociological perspectives.
Prof. Jamir’s lecture underscored the symbiotic relationship between human, nature and spirit in indigenous worldview. She also emphasized the role of indigenous people as skillful specialists in preservation of environment. Drawing context from the Naga indigenous ecological practices the speaker presented how indigenous knowledge system could be incorporated for frameworks towards environmental sustainability. The session also included a ‘q and a’, where students raised pertinent questions further enriching the discussion.
A total no of 66 students from 5th and 3rd Semester, and 5 faculty members participated in the program.
